Katherine & Surrounds
You mightn’t have heard of a town called Katherine? It is the point where the traditional lands of the Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman peoples converge, making it an important meeting place for Aboriginal people for many thousands of years, and it remains so today.
There are a number of must-do attractions you can easily reach from Katherine, including Nitmiluk National Park, home to the beautiful Katherine Gorge, Katherine Hot Springs and the Cutta Cutta Caves. There are many Aboriginal-led cultural and bush experiences to explore too.
You can see Katherine’s incredible ancient Aboriginal rock art at the Judbarra / Gregory National Park. Plan to take the Escarpment and Nawulbinbin Walks, which have signs explaining the Aboriginal stories of the landscape’s creation. The Nganalam Art Site at Keep River National Park has wonderful examples of rock art characteristic of the Miriwoong and Gadgerong people, while the beautiful gorge at Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park is adorned with ancient Wagiman art.
