Western Australia

Western Australia is the land that time forgot; ancient, vast and spectacular. Occupying a third of the Australian continent it is more than 2,600,000 square kilometres in size. Distances in Western Australia are so huge it would take months to drive the whole state. The vast majority of the state’s landscape is desert or outback, scorching ochre red sands and huge, high blue skies that go on forever.

The majority of the state’s population reside in the south western area of the state, home to internationally renowned Margaret River and Swan Valley wine regions and the states riverside capital Perth. Resting gracefully on the banks of the Swan River, Perth offers a sophisticated city experience with many bars, restaurants and shopping precincts as well as being a great starting point for discovering the rest of Western Australia.

A vast and diverse state, Western Australia encompasses everything from the far north with idyllic Broome, the Coral Coast and the wild Kimberley and Pilbara regions to central with Kalgoolie’s searing deserts and spectacular National Parks. Down south is bustling Perth, picturesque Rottnest Island, wild and windy Albany and Margaret River’s vineyards, beaches and wineries.

The large size and diversity of Western Australia is also reflected in the Aboriginal people of the state. Aboriginal inhabitants of Western Australia date back between 50 to 70, 000 years and represents the oldest continuous living culture in the world. Aboriginal culture and Dreamtime are intimately linked to the landscape and there are a variety of Aboriginal cultural tours through Western Australia. Learn about bush food and medicine. Explore prehistoric rock art galleries. Meet internationally-renowned and local contemporary artists. Join in celebrations of traditional music and dance. And discover the landscape and the Dreamtime.
